Why did ancient Germanic tribes prefer Arian Christianity to Catholic Christianity?

For example, why did the Goths, Vandals, Lombards etc. - when they converted to Christianity - choose Arian Christianity instead of the dominant Roman Catholicism in Roman times? I know the Franks were the exception but that was after the Western Roman Empire ended.
